we all have memories of the falklands as somebody stated earlier some people who were not directly there in may also have had problems ..i have a very good reason for this i went down on illustrious as i stated in my previous post we went to action stations most days..i lost good friends on the sheff and ardent...its hard for me to talk about the falklands to anybody...but one thing you must stay a band of brothers and dont let voting split people apart..be proud of who you are what you did and the cov of which you served on...and mostly for the fallen that still patrol the falkland islands...all the best mark
hi guys just wanted to say i am reading 4 weeks in may,i was lucky and went down on illustrious 2nd task force,I just wanted to say how brave and corageous you all were...it has touched me deeply having also lost great freinds on ardent...i was sat here in tears reading your captains book,as it brought 1982 back to me once again.to those still with us and those gone...you have my upmost respect...god bless you all.

Malcolm, thanks for remembering, I like many of us aboard her that day can never forget our shipmates still on patrol, and how over the years a few have joined them, and will continue to join them as time goes by โ heck one day Iโll to be with them once againโฆ It took me many years to come to terms with what happend on the 25th, but now I look back and smile instead of hitting the bottle โ I wish a few who have joined those still on patrol had done the same, but for the grace of God.
Once again thanks for your thoughts, and support, hope you can make it to a re-union one year โ I believe like we all do, the more the merrier.
Yourโs Aye โMalcolm โYorkieโ Burtonโ.
Malcolm
Thank you for your message of support for our ship. It means a lot that we are not forgotten by the folks at home and abroad in our fight to preserve democracy. Many years have passed since the war, but there's not a day goes by when I don't think about what happened in May 1982.
Not really sure what to write , but just wanted to let you all know that "us civilians" do give a damm about what you men achieved and the losses and heartache that you all had to endure on that fateful day.If it had not been for a ships company like yours taking the fight to the Argentine Airforce, the losses to the troopships would have been horrendous.
Always Remembered
"The Fighting Coventry" and the men who fought with such determination and bravery
Nick, I remember Baz, he was a killick greenie, and I also served with him onboard HMS Gloucester a few years later when he was a PO.
Does anyone remember Petty Officer 'Baz' Wakefield?
Gentlemen of the Coventry,
I was recently on a trip to the Falklands, I would just like to say that I saw Coventrys Cross on the Stanley memorial and paused for a moment to pay my respects. As an ex pongo I would just like to pass on my respects to all of you who serving on her that day.
Doug.
I have a few, I have not yet got around to having them uploaded, but I shall get it sorted ASAP.
Does anyone have pics from the recent reunion? I'd like to see who I missed seeing
I am out of good manners wondering whether someone could get a message to ask Simon Rouse who went on the pilgrimage whether I can use three of his photos in my doctoral thesis.
I am an ex Royal Marine who was on the pilgrimage last year who has PTSD. I am writing about my journey back and the linking it to my experience of living in civvy street. I took loads of pictures but i do occassionally come across some that are better then mine.
Thanks
Dave 'yes they gave me my brain back' Jackson
ps there is a 'm' as in 'com' on the end of my email.
Evening shippers, this is the first time for a few weeks Ive been able to get on line, due to the work situation. First of all the Cov gunnerys Ive recently seen Dean Richo Richmond, he's work at BMW where I am at present and send his best wishes to you all.
Right the association is up and running, so that will answer some questions. As Rocky pointed out my spell check isnt working so before I send the deoc's to Tony I will check it again. Simon looks like we both have the same problem.
I would like to take the oppertunity to thank all those who came to Pompy for the reunion, but most of all those who listen to what we had to say and backed us up.
No more digs at each other please gents, and Sam if I got it wrong then Im sorry old mate.
So I will contact Rocky and we will get things on the move again, until then take care shippers and clam seas and sandy bottoms (the real oldies will understand that one)
Doc.
Happy birthday Yorkie! I'm in Virginia for a long weekend for Brenda's birthday today, which is also Flag Day in the US, and also Liberation Day down south.
Latest news from my household - the house is off the market and we're staying in FL for a few years yet. I;ve got a Facebook page also, so if you find Paul's or Yorkie's you'll see mine too.
Anyone in Belgium - westvleteren 12 is what is needed by my new "Ship" type working stiffs here in Phoenix, AZ. SOOooo, if anyone of you salts is in Belgium anytime soon - email me, and pick up some of the stuff - you will be rewarded... Well said Chris, alas I forgot to complain on the board so I'll shut my yap for now - talk about missed opportunity... I turned 50 last Saturday the 7th June - so all of you that said I'll never make 25, can kiss my "Tanned" butt. Plus I have 6 pack Ab's and weigh 175lbs - talk about right bod, wrong time! Missing all my shipmates, BBQ month is around the corner - when we all celebrate giving the USA back to them. Only averaging 110 here in Phoenix, but its the early days of summer here. Take care - I have a Facebook page - Paul Inman does too - so look him up on Facebook, and you will find me too. So everyone go to Belgium - and email me before you do!
Chris, I quite agree. Let's everyone stop the bickering and get on with preserving our memories. I was at Collingwood many years ago for one of the first reunions and remember (and still have the photos) the reunion and service.
Simon - spelling is OK, the original dit I questioned was operator error!
I've had mail from Rocky about the forming of the association - my whole point on that was that nothing posted here since the reunion weekend either confirmed or denied the formation of the association. I'm all for democracy and hope to be over for future reunions.
"WELL DONE" Chris,
Thankyou.
Shipmates: To put things back into perspective, I attended an industry visit to the new Navy EW section in HMS Collingwood yesterday and was fortunate to be able to hold a small rememberance ceremony with the local bish at the Naval EW Ratings FI memorial site outside the section building. This of course includes both Bernie Still and Adrian Sunderland both in my department on Cov. It was very emotional for me as I was allowed to speak some persoal words, but it did remind me once again what we are all about.
I have to say that on the long drive back up to Lincolnshire last night I was reminded of what happended 26 years ago and how silly this current 'debate' has become on whether there is or is not a piece of paper that makes a formal association. Guys - it really does not matter, we can all meet up whenever we can make it and share a few wets. Lets us move on regardless - we owe it to our old shipmates.
Take care shipmates.
I managed to attend that weekend of the 25th May as it is an important subject for me, and originally i was a "no" to the idea but after having my concerns heard and discussing the issues, I changed my mind as did the rest of the guys to a "yes". Unfortunately not too many of our ships company heard about the vote or do not have access to a computer as a result the voting numbers were very low and in favour of "no", however that said the majority as it stands has now been reversed to "yes", Well done to Doc for persevering I'm sure there will be another Dit put on here soon.Dougie hope the spelling is o.k no spell check available or maybe the operator!!
Simon Rouse
I agree with Sam. Rocky posted a dit here asked for a vote and got it. The answer was NO I live in Florida WE ARE THE ONLY ONES ALLOWED TO OVERTURN DEMOCRACY. unless you are related to our president.
So I guess the answer is NO.
Doc, you have misunderstood and appear to be making this personal.
I have never had anything against formal Associations,(RNA, RMA, RNCA, SAMA, RNCCA, Ton Class, Submariners,C class Destroyers, Gunners, Reggies, etc, etc).
My point, for the last time. A vote was taken, the response was NO and that decision was overturned by those who managed to get to Pompey, thereby leaving two groups of people at odds.
As I said before, I wish you well. End of subject. Sam
