Yorkie - you obviously have far too much time on your hands pal! Unlike me. Tomorrow is my last day of SRCC at Collingwood. I have trudged around Salisbury plain for a night (with my friendly heavy burgan)... followed by a distex. I have been beasted by club swingers and done the Cliff and Chasm (Cough and Spasam) - I am a different shape! Tomorrow I do the assult course. It has been good, but VERY hard work when you are 46, I never ever want to see camouflage again!! I am really looking forward to seeing the family again, and getting some normallity back in my life. Brick - best of luck tracking down Eddie. Are we going to get a Casual Onlookers come-back tour???!!!

From 1773 the kings of Denmark held both duchiesโ€”Schleswig as full sovereigns, Holstein as princes of the Holy Roman Empire; both duchies were in personal union with, but not part of, Denmark. The Congress of Vienna (1814โ€“15) did not change the status of the two duchies, except that the German Confederation had succeeded the Holy Roman Empire in its suzerainty over Holstein. A constitution for Holstein was guaranteed by the German Confederation. After World War I the Danish majority of N Schleswig determined by plebiscite (1920) the return of that part of the province to Denmark. The former free city of Lรผbeck and the Lรผbeck district of Oldenburg were incorporated into Schleswig-Holstein in 1937. After World War II, Schleswig-Holstein was constituted (1946) as a state of West Germany, and in 1990 it became a state of reunified Germany. So I was right! - Just got the date wrong! And yep it was the Nipogon - the Mackenzie was on the Med trip on HMS Blake.

Kiel, the capital of the state of Schleswig-Holstein - Germany BUT!!! In the 16th cent. Schleswig and Holstein (which had also become a duchy) underwent complex subdivisions, although theoretically the principle of the inseparability of the two duchies was not violated. The three main divisions were: a ducal portion, including parts of both duchies, which was conferred on Adolphus, duke of Holstein-Gottorp, younger brother of Christian III of Denmark, and on his descendants, the dukes of Holstein-Gottorp; a royal portion, including parts of both duchies, ruled directly by the Danish kings; and a common portion, ruled jointly by the Danish kings and the dukes of Holstein-Gottorp.

Just to be pedantic, Keil is in Germany, not Denmark, and the Canadian ship was HMCS Nipigon, not Mackenzie. Somewhere I've still got the photos from some of our mess parties with our NATO allies - does anyone remember the 'spoon race'? Looking forward to the reunion in 2007, we've already started saving up for it.

Rocky - having known you for all of my naval career - HMS Blake so on and so forth... You are still hyper-active, except when re-decorating the steps of the Home Club (wish I were there for that.). Good on you shippers, more of us old farts need to run around the moors, climb mountains, building rafts, ford streams and live under a thin piece of canvas in the rain, and snow... Don't forget the Dead Elvis we had to carry, used him has a pillow in the tent at night!!! Also beat the Be-Geeze out of him when no-one was looking! Wish I was there with you, NOT! Phoenix is a paradise at the moment, its the only time of year people don't complain about the weather. Granted they have Fur coats and WindBreakers on - some in Foul Weather and once only suits - but then the temperature does get below 80 degrees at times.

As always...I never know when to stop. I start my RNR Senior Rates Command Course (The modern version of the SRs Leadership Course) next week. So please wish me well. As you read this, I am probably huffing and puffing around an assault course, or tramping along on the 24 hour trek around Earlstoke. I am too old for this sort of skylark...why am I doing it? If you know, please reply and include a GPS!!!
