Mick, I did see the news tonight and it is a great tribute to our guys and others still on patrol from events in the last 60 years, it's not before time and no thanks to the lottery fund who refused any funding for the memorial until pressured by the public outcry. I for one will be making a visit as soon as.......Ssam

Shipmates, you will have probably seen on the news today - the dedication of the National Armed Forces Memorial.Although i wasn't able to be present today,i have visited the site during the Memorial's construction. It is a truly remarkable and fitting memorial and contains some 16,000 names. All our lost shipmates are recorded on the Memorial. If you want to view their entries go to www.forcesmemorial.org.uk and look under roll of honour. Maybe Damien (Webmaster) you could put a link to the site? Paul(Bomber)Mills name is recored and another ex-Cov Steve Allen (RO1)G - who if i remember rightly was killed training for Field Gun at Excellent when we were sailing South. If you are ever passing this way i recommend visiting the Memorial and Arboretum - maybe this could be a future outing or meeting location? - SAMA held their AGM and dedicated a bench earlier this year. THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOREVERMORE. Regards to all ex-Cov's Mick (Jack) Daniels & Family

Jerry, I thought you would have remembered Ian Luff, LMEM(M),he too served on both D118 and F88. I too agree we should periodically visit Coventry as I agree we would most certainly be looked after, but still feel Portsmouth is where we should hold our main re-unions/rememberance ceremonies.

I agree with having a reunion in portsmouth we are far more affilliated to it, but some thing should be done in Coventry as well maybe not yearly, I believe I was the only person to serve on both ships D118 & F88, I went to a fun run in 89, and we were looked after brilliantly by the Fire brigade and the Police and also the people of Coventry, I think both deserve recognition, but Portsmouth in the main.

Doc, we need to know about the Associaton, I understand it's democratic, but how are we going forward? Who's on the committee and how do we (the Association) make decisions, for example whether we do actually need a new web site, location of AGM venues, etc? Sam
Admin Reply:
This web site is going to undergo a bit of a revamp shortly to make it easier for me to maintain and enable quicker updates of things like the photo galleries - I'm quite happy to add an Association section to the new site, rather than have things split into two sites. - Damien

Good evening shippers. Rockys just told me about the wave of feeling about holding the reunion in Coventry, this is a democratic association , so if the feeling is for pompy then I will cnacel all the planning. Will contact the Home club to book the required private rooms to hold the meeting and the dinner if you want one. Doc.

Hello, Have now received and seen the DVD. From what I saw looks like you were a great crew and always had alot of fun!

Not wishing to tread on toes at the start (but never one stay quiet) might it be an idea to have the inaugural meeting of the Association in Pompey and put venues on the agenda if there's so much support for Pompey? Okay, I'll shut up. Sam

I also feel more attached to Pompey than Coventry - I went to the memorial service in Coventry in '82 and then saw a reunion advertised so I went, only to find it was for the previous Coventry of WW2 fame. As Yorkie said in a previous entry, we're moving to Virginia as soon as our house sells here in Florida. If anyone wants to buy it please contact me & I will send you a link from the realtor's website about the house. It's so warm here all year that you can pick up the daily paper from the driveway on Christmas morning wearing shorts and nothing else! Smooth sailing to you all.

Taff, don't know about the date of the reunion but think Doc was visiting Coventry on the 21st Sep, not saying that is the date of the reunion. Just thought I'd mention it. Sam

To be honest, I also feel a greater affinity to Pompey than Coventry (I only went to Coventry twice whilst serving on the ship). If the reunion in Coventry is going to be in September, then it would also be good to see some others in Pompey in May if anyone cares to go there

I'm having second thoughts about a big bash in Coventry next year. I personally would prefer to meet at the Home club as in the past few years and have an informal get together with the wreath laying on the Sunday morning. I fel a much greater affinity to Portsmouth than Coventry, it brings back many memories when I am there. If anyone else feels the same I'll see you there in May. Best regards to you all, Sam.

Thanks very much for the DVD received today. It revives vivid memories of the trip out the Fez and the good times we all had. There are forgotten faces, some names remembered and others that the brain cells have failed on.The overall impression it gives is what a great ship she was and will never be forgotten. The comment from my wife, who came to HK, was that it was too short but very impressive.

I recently received a large set of interesting photographs of Ascension at the time of the Falklands War. They add a little more to our knowledge of the War, and I thought you might be interested. They are at http://www.naval-history.net/FpxAAscension.htm.
