SAMA (82) Sponsored Indulgence Scheme and Booking of Liberty Lodge
SAMA (82) Members and Medal Holders - Update November 2009
The Indulgence Scheme continues to meet expectations in respect of its concept and the delivery has been very positive.
A number of minor changes have been implemented to improve the service being offered to Medal Holders and are as follows:-
1. Information and Flight Application Pack.
This has been amended and improved and will be avaialble to all applicants very shortly.
2. Applying for the Information and Flight Application Pack.
All applicants should apply to The Secretary at the SAMA (82) Office for a pack to be sent to them in writing, by phone or by email. Do NOT contact The Sponsor for this service.

3. Submission of Completed Flight Request and Liberty Lodge Booking Request.
Once applicants have completed the Flight Request and Liberty Lodge Accommodation Request, they should both be forwarded to the Sponsor, Malcolm Simpson, at the address shown in the Application Pack.
4. Booking of Accommodation in Liberty Lodge.
Applicants do not now need to contact the Lodge Manger to book Accommodation prior to submitting a request to travel. The Sponsor will now book and allocate accommodation as bids are received. This is clarified in the New Pack.
5. Travel for those not entitled to Indulgence.
Family Members or Carers are not entitled to Indulgence Passage. Medal Holders who wish to have Family Members or Carers accompany them on their trip to the Islands may apply, through The Sponsor, for a Pre Paid Flight that can be booked via the Falkland Islands Government Travel Office in London. The Sponsor will discuss this with anyone wishing to use this means of getting those not entitled to Indulgence Passage on the same flight as them. Contact the Sponsor on the telephone number below to discuss your requirements.
6. Aircraft - Flight Frequency and Capacity.
The Air Bridge is operated under contract to โFlyglobespanโ who have a 2 year MOD Contract, renewable every 12 months thereafter. They fly a Boeing 767 which at present operates 2 flights per week both South and North but this is subject to change in the future. (Medal holders will be informed accordingly by The Sponsor).
The Aircraft capacity for passengers is 184 seats. Of these, a number are allocated to The Falkland Islands Government and The Ascension Islands Government for the movement of their respective residents. With no extra freight required to be moved and with no reinforcement or FTXโs taking place the maximum number of seats that could be avaialble for use, as part of the Military Allocation, is 129. Medal Holders applying for an Indulgence Passage have NO priority in being allocated a seat on any leg of the trip, either South or North, and can be offloaded at anytime if required. This is extremely unlikely, but be aware that it is a possibility. Once MPA and Movement Ops Brize Norton have completed their Manifests and spare capacity is found, then The Sponsor will be given authority to call forward, by Priority of Application Date, those Medal Holders wishing to travel.
Any Questions, Requests for advice, or concerns, should be addressed to the Sponsor. It is the Sponsor who acts on behalf of SAMA (82). It is he alone that can respond and react to all Indulgence Passengers needs.

For Mick Daniels:-
The plans have just been passed by The National Memorial Arboretum Trustees for SAMA (82) to build a major Falklands Conflict Memorial at the Arboretum to be dedicated in 2012 on the 30th Anniversary in May or June, it may be built on the existing Falklands Plot or they may decide that it would be more appropriate to move the Falklands Plot - still to be decided by their Memorial chaps. All details and plans are on the SAMA Website Discussion Board. Fundraisng events are imminent. A major event is a Pen-Y-Fan hike in September next year (2010), hope to see as many Coventry's as possible on the mountain or in the bar at the end. Various minor events have already raised ยฃ6,000.00 without much effort, mainly by the SAMA Caravan and Camping Club at their events throughout 2009, but about ยฃ50,000.00 is needed.

I regret to inform you that Martin 'Divs' Devine has passed away. He was involved in an accident a little over a week ago and suffered a massive brain haemorrhage from which he never recovered. he died in the loving arms of his wife and 2 children.
Nov 8 2009, UJC bar, I ran into (the names may not be absolutey correct)Ricky Ricardo and Tom, also Tex from Ardent I think.
What a good evening and good people, we reminisced about all kinds of things, and drank lots too.
I sincerely hope we meet again up there or other places. And you better let me buy you lot a drink next time.
Hearing your own stories makes the larger picture more complete, I appreciated that lot. So if you go next year the first couple are on me.
My mobility was even more useless when I left the bar, Thanks for that hahaha.
I do look froward to seeing you again.
All my best regards and my rememberance of the fallen associate with The Cov and my own battalion.
Yours aye
Tim
Cfn Armourer 2 Para,
Still looking to contact Dave Nuttall the yeoman, anyone know his whereaouts.
Mick, thanks for the info.
As stated earlier, I attended an event in Tampa, just a few airborne troops, another ex-RN and me, in a bar. At 1100 the whole place fell silent (even the locals who didn't know what was going on). My thanks to them, and to all those who didn't come home
Dougie,hi
Pangbourne is the location of the Falklands Islands Memorial Chapel.
www.falklands-chapel.org.uk
The National Memorial Arboretum www.thenma.org.uk
is located near Lichfield in Staffordshire and within the grounds is located the Armed Forces Memorial which contains the names of our lost shipmates along with some 15,000 + names of other armed forces personnel killed on duty since the end of the second world war.
Some ex-Cov's may remember RO(G)Steve Allen who left us to run Field Gun for Pompey and he was tragically killed as we traveled south in 82 - Steve's name is on the Memorial.
You can search on any name to view at:
www.thenma.org.uk
Another moving day today - we did and will continue to remember them.
regards to all ex - Cov's,
Mick(Jack)Daniels
Dear Sirs,
I'm an independent / producer screenwriter currently developing a Hollywood motion picture about the air-naval engagements during 1982โs South Atlantic War. The project is not political in nature. It aims to highlight professionalism and sacrifice at the tactical and operational level of the conflict at sea and in the air. Moreover, we want to show that behind the machines on both sides, there were men. I'm already interviewing combat vets on both sides and will continue to do so. Naturally, I have the highest respect for the professionalism, courage and sacrifice of the men of HMS Coventry and should any of her crew be interested in giving me his account of events, I would be most appreciative and would forward the necessary paper work to make it happen.
Sincerely,
Pablo Ponce de Leon
fantastic rememberance day service at belfast city hall this morning, god bless all our heros
For Mick Daniels - the National Arboretum is at Pangbourne, correct? I'm trying to win the lottery/get enough money together to visit UK next year and really want to go there. I'd also like to go back to the Islands before I get too old and infirm.
I'll be attending a Remembrance Day ceremony in Tampa in the morning, invited by an ex-2Para buddy who was there and will be taking my camera so I hope to get some pics up soon (if not here then on facebook. I'm on there as Keith Dougie Douglas).
Rest In peace, shipmates, you are NOT forgotten
Shipmates,
this week the family made the short journey to the National Memorial Arboretum. We observed the last post and 2 minutes silence - this is the only place in the UK which honours our lost shipmates every single day.
We then placed a small cross at the National Monument below the names of our lost shipmates who names are proudly carved on one of the walls - it was moving to see their names amongst many names of conflicts past and present.
If you have not yet been to the Arboretum it is well recommended.
There is talk of a replication of the cemetery at San Carlos been constructed in time for the 30th anniversary - i am also enquiring if there is an opportunity for us to have something dedicated to the ship at the site.
Damien - i have photographs which can be shared of the Monument - can you provide details of how to forward them?
Remembering tomorrow and raising a glass to our lost shipmates.
regards to all ex-Cov's
Mick (Jack)Daniels & Family
Remembrance day once again - to all my freinds who have crossed the line - I salute you.RIP..
Is it to early to ask for dates of 2010 reunion yet ?
Dear Sir
My name is Marcelo Crist, I am Argentine and I'm writing a book about the 1982 conflict. in order to build the chapter on HMS Coventry, would like to know (and if not bothered by the question) is whether the time of the evacuation, the entire crew was transferred to HMS Broadsword and from there to other vessels, or were taken to the Fort Austin and Uganda directly?.
Sorry for the inconvenience, and hope that history will teach us to close and learn from past mistakes, that our people had to live.
Sincerely.
Marcelo
Hello,
In 1981 i was on board of HrMs Kortenaer (Royal Dutch Navy) during the STANAVFORLANT trip, also on that trip was the HMS Coventry and other NATO ships.
I have a few photo's of HMS Coventry during that trip.
I would love to scan them and send them to this website.
During that trip we had a few guys from HMS Coventry on board, they loved the heineken beer in our bar.
Greetings Peter

see above.I would just like to point out that there is a slight error in the who shot down the A4 Sky Hawk that sank teh Coventry. It was not Fearless but Intrepid one of our association members AB (m)Neal Wilkinson. This has been varified by the pilot Valesco.
Both Wilky and Velasco are going to meet up in soon October and a programme made by the BBC and shown in the new year.
To finish great site.
